Adopting a wellness approach to alcohol consumption is not just a trend it is a more conscious mindset, self-care, and making informed decisions.

The Millennials and Gen Z are slowly canceling the culture of becoming drunk uncles and aunts. Through taking part in the sober curious movement which does not entirely mean sobriety. This movement is simply a more conscious alcohol consumption whereby you do not just drink out of habit. Because it is a weekend or it is a pre-Friday and that is “Thursday”.

Sober curious encourages one to reflect on what they want their future to look like said Willoughby. Rather than spending time drinking one could use that time to be creative, and healthy (exercising, reading, and hiking).
Reducing drinking or having non-alcoholic drinks helps to improve or prevent so many things in one’s body. Such as long-term and serious risks; cardiovascular diseases, mental health issues, cancer, and liver failure.

It will also prevent one from being an alcoholic and will help one ask themselves valid questions as to why they should drink, and to what extent should they be intoxicated. Can also reduce a lot of rape, and GBV cases, especially in South Africa. Studies have shown that Alcohol is an acknowledged factor in perpetration of more than 40% of rape and binge drinking is strongly associated with interpersonal violence, motor vehicle accidents, and risk-taking behavior.
Challenge yourself to a sober curious mindset by not drinking anytime you feel like it. Journal how you felt after making that decision not to drink. Make sure to substitute it with a hobby you love but have been neglecting because you told yourself you do not have enough time.
