Nelson Mandela International Day is an annual global celebration that honours the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela. The Nelson Mandela Foundation has announced that 18 July 2024 will be a celebration that has a very unique theme. “It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity.” The theme’s main purpose is to focus on the necessary action needed to confront social injustices and find ways to implement global change.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation is a non-profit organisation that is focused on memory and legacy work and it was founded by Nelson Mandela. In light of the Nelson Mandela celebration, the relaunch of the Mandela Day website has been announced by the acting CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Verne Harris. The Nelson Mandela website is a great platform that allows individuals to come together and participate in the fight against social injustice and inequity. On Mandela Day individuals are urged to get involved in helping others and making an effective change. There are many ways to participate in Mandela Day and the Annual Mandela Day Walk and Run is a great place to start. This event will take place at the scenic Bullring, the DP World Wanderers Stadium in lllovo , Johannesburg on 20 July 2024. This year the event is expecting approximately 10,000 participants who then have the option of both a 5km and 10km walk as well as a 21 km run. Each participant has the luxury of choosing their preferred distance.
This year, Nelson Mandela Day has an immense amount of support coming from BP South Africa, Balwin Properties and other partners which include DP World Wanderers Stadium, Lion’s Cricket, Discovery Vitality and Bloomberg. Nelson Mandela Day is expected to be very fun and memorable. To honour its centenary in South Africa, BP Southern Africa has voiced its enthusiasm about being a part of the event. “We are proud to be a part of such a meaningful event that honours the values of Nelson Mandela. As we mark our 100 years in this country, supporting initiatives that bring communities together aligns perfectly with our commitment to making a positive impact.”

Mr. Jono Leaf-Wright who is the CEO of Lion and DP World Wanderers Stadium expressed the importance of the event and what it signifies. “By partaking in the Mandela Day Walk and Run,” he states, “we are not merely commemorating Nelson Mandela’s birthday but are actively participating in the promotion of his ideals.”
