Suicide rates in South Africa are rapidly increasing making mental health disorders the most serious problem in the country. According to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group, there are 23% known incidents of suicide in South Africa per day.
Mental illness, particularly depression, anxiety , alcohol and drug abuse, prior suicide attempts, and the presence of firearms in the family are all risk factors for young people attempting suicide. Depressed people account for 60% of suicide attempts in South Africa.
It can make you unhappy and cause problems in your daily life, such as at school, work, or in your relationships. Symptoms can usually be controlled with a combination of medicines and talk therapy (psychotherapy). Here are some of the ways to deal with mental illness:
Speak to professionals
There are public organisations and private practices that offer free counseling and therapy across the country. This includes, The Lifeline Western Cape Province and Johannesburg: This organisation offers free 24-hour counselling services over the phone or on WhatsApp.There is also The South African Depression Group which is also a 24-hour counseling service.
Connect with other people
Good relationship are essential for mental health. They can assist you in developing a sense of belonging and self-worth by allowing you to share your happy experiences.

Be Physically Active
Being active is beneficial not just to your physical health and fitness, but also psychologically too.
Learning New skills
Learning new skills improves your brain health and memory. According to neurologists learning a new skill changes the physical structures of the brain. By stimulating neurons in the brain, more neural pathways are formed; the more pathways that are formed, the faster impulses can travel.

It’s possible to improve your mental health by paying greater attention to the present moment. This encompasses your ideas and feelings, as well as your body and the environment.

Giving and kindness can help you connect with other people, which can boost your mental health. It could be as simple as showing kindness to others or as complex as volunteering in your community.
